Heroes
Yes, I like the rest of the world was sad to hear that James Kim died while trying to get help for his stranded family in the mountains of Oregon. I am however tired of hearing him glorified as a hero. A hero would not have gotten his family into such a situation in the first place. He ignored signs saying the road was dangerous in snow. He continued driving when it was obvious the road was deserted and unsafe.
You want to see a real hero? Look no further than my husband. There is no bigger hero. Everything he has ever done since we were married was for his family. And now he struggles with a disease that is ravaging his body and will one day, no matter what we do, succeed in taking his life. He struggles without complaint and without self pity. And all the while his family is his first priority.
I remember the first Christmas we lived in our new house. He strung lights around the kitchen windows and the front door. We stood on the sidewalk with our arms around each other admiring the lights. He turned to me and said, "This has always been my fantasy--to stand with my wife looking at my house decorated for Christmas."
He is my hero.
