O For a Muse of Fire

I am a widow/mother/daughter/sister/aunt/woman in California. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed. Sometimes I feel calm. Both feelings are because I am a widow/mother/daughter/sister/aunt/woman in California.

Uninvited

Cancer is at our house. It crept silently into our house uninvited and has stayed here unwelcomed for over two years. We tiptoe around cancer barely saying the name aloud for fear of stirring it up. We have tried showing it the door several times, but it digs in and shows no sign of leaving. It's too late to bar the door. Cancer is here. We now, however, fear its leaving more than its arrival. In its leaving it will take one of us away with it. Those whom cancer leaves behind will be forever changed. However, what will not change is our love for each other. We are a family that has been imposed upon by cancer, not destroyed by cancer.
